Best Albums 2010: Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross – The Social Network

The Social Network is one of my favorite movies of the year, second to probably Inception. It has great acting, and great dramatization of a simple story. On first thought, you would think who wants to watch a movie about Facebook? How interesting could the lawsuits that Facebook faced be?

Extremely interesting is the answer. The movie probably doesn’t mirror reality exactly, but the movie does well to tell a good story. For such a simple premise the movie doesn’t seem slow at all. And I believe the soundtrack has a lot to do with that. The Social Network’s soundtrack is probably the best original composition work for a movie I’ve heard since The Dark Knight’s soundtrack. The strings are tense, the piano is melancholic. The subtle natures of the soundtrack ironically multiplies the emotions you feel as you watch the movie. “Hand Covers Bruise” is by far my favorite track off the soundtrack. The brilliantly simple piano line on top of a wildly random and tense string vibrato evokes so much attention from the listener. The great thing about this soundtrack is that it can stand on it’s own and still have the emotional impact that it slams in your face. (It won’t slam a multi-million dollar lawsuit in your face thankfully.)

My favorites from the soundtrack

“Hand Covers Bruise”

“A Familiar Taste”

“In the Hall of the Mountain King”

Two other very close runner-ups for best soundtrack is the amazing Inception soundtrack by Hanz Zimmer and Daft Punk’s Tron:Legacy soundtrack.

Best Albums 2010: BT – These Hopeful Machines

Including this in the list of runner-up is debatable for most, especially within’ the electronic community who would probably say it’s a disappointment in comparison to his early albums (No, it’s not the uber-lame album cover that makes it a disappointment for them – ok, maybe, yes a little). It is a true statement that BT’s 6th studio album is a vastly different feel and sound than his 1st albums. He has ventured quite a bit of ways from his trance roots. Also, let’s be honest, BT is not the most eloquent lyricist. His songs are elementary-level with regards to meaning and is a close mirror to the mainstream pop that you will hear on the radio.

So why is this a runner-up for me? Well simply put, electronic music composition is where BT shines. He puts the glitches in the right place. He has vocal melodies that stick in your head for hours on end. He tweaks the build of a synth in the right timing. Most of the tracks on this double CD album are composed with elegance. I understand the arguments that he is crossing the electronic sound into the mainstream and pop world, but he does it with a lot more eloquence than the butchering that Black Eyed Peas and David Guetta have done.

The great thing about this album is that it has attracted some of the best remixers in the world and as such have produced some of the best trance and house remixes this year. Producers like Breakfast, Marcus Schossow, Ferry Corsten, and Armin Van Buuren have worked there magic on tracks from this album. It’s definately an album worth hearing, even if you may not be the biggest electronic music fan.

Best Albums 2010: John Legend and The Roots – Wake Up!

A Foreword

It’s that time of year again.

It’s colder. It’s rainy (maybe snowing?). You look around you and the streets are decorated with festive Christmas lights. You just feel different — is it that Christmas spirit? The time of year where you enjoy the company of friends and family while sipping a deliciously steaming hot chocolate. The holiday music is everywhere in sight.

But no, it’s that time of year again to look back, at least for a music junkie.

To look back at the best albums released in the year of 2010. Albums that put a smile on your face. Albums that challenged you to think. Or albums that were just plain fun to listen to — or rather, ones you couldn’t stop listening to.

For the next 3 weeks I will be posting my personal top 10 albums of 2010. Some most will agree with, but some are just personal favorites that don’t have quite the same critical acclaim. Before we dive into the top 10, I wanted to feature 5 great albums that didn’t quite make the cut of my top 10 list.

Wake Up!

I’ve always been a fan of both The Roots and John Legend, so when they came together to create a cover album I was certain it would be great. However cover albums are risky – risky because there is a natural comparison between originals and other covers done of the same song. But I think John Legend and The Roots made a great effort to dig past obvious cover choices and still have a relevant message to the music he was trying to present.

“I wanted to choose cover songs that were so under the radar, so uniquely interpreted, that it would take you a second to realise that these are cover songs.” – John Legend

I think he succeeds. You couldn’t tell that this album is a cover album unless you were told that it was. I can’t tell you how refreshing it is to hear a group release something that sounds like it was actually recorded live. No electronic tricks. No auto-tuned cover-ups. Just the raw elements of instruments, the natural voice, and great musical talent. Even more refreshing is the lyrical content. Today’s “rhythm and blues” is filled with sex and love issues. John Legend is right in saying there is a gap in today’s music that talks about something important other than issues revolving around the topic of love and relationships.

Not all of the songs suit John Legend’s voice, but this cover album is such a great effort and is refreshing in the midst of today’s music. It is definitely an album to listen to in 2010.

Shinichi Osawa – Zingaro (Fabian Remix)

Shinichi Osawa – Zingaro (Fabian Remix) by SO2 REMIXES

So a couple hours after my post on Shinichi Osawa’s amazing remix album, the SoundCloud account decided to release some more remixes that will be featured on the album. And I couldn’t believe my ears when I heard this remix. It is joy wrapped up in a nice remix. The grooves are just right and the pulsating triplet rhythm is fun. By far, the best remix off of the album. High Five!

Coldplay – Christmas Lights

I love Christmas music. So much, I’m glad they play it earlier and earlier every year. It does bother me that a lot of pop artists try to get in the Christmas action by releasing Christmas albums — most of which are half-hearted attempts to make a quick buck.

So I was skeptical of when I heard Coldplay released one. I love the band so much I had to listen to it though. And it didn’t disappoint, in fact, it kind of doesn’t even sound like your typical Christmas song. It sounds more like a bonus song from one of their albums. It’s a great song that I can listen to even out of Christmas season. High Five!

Shinichi Osawa – SO:2 Remixes

Shinichi Osawa has always been a house hero for me. He knows how to set the right grooves and the best choppy, yet flowing chord progressions. He released an album of great songs back in the summer called SO:2. And now, he is releasing a remix album with some of the hottest house remixers on the scene right now. Here are a couple of the standouts for me:

Shinichi Osawa – Love Will Guide You feat. Tommie Sunshine (Edwin Van Cleef Remix)

Frightened Rabbit – Living in Colour

Wow! I feel like I’m hearing the enthusiasm and epic-ness of Jonsi except it is english. I’m glad I discovered this band, they are definitely being added to the number of bands I would love to see live.

Very cool acousti-cover of the awesome Passion Pit song “Sleepyhead”. It has a real different feel to it and is well-done. High Five!
